Once your rankings increase for specific keywords, you’ll receive more traffic, which leads to more enquiries and more sales.

“SEO is the holy grail of online marketing,” says Easy Dial Marketing director Anthony Khoury. “Once your rankings increase for specific keywords, you’ll receive more traffic, which leads to more enquiries and more sales.”

It can be difficult to get traffic to your website, but unless you embrace various search engine optimisation (SEO) tools and techniques the chance of being found online is near impossible, says Khoury.

To help you get started, check out his guide to the terms and phrases you are likely to encounter as you make your bid for as high a place as possible in search engine result rankings:

Title tag

This is the tag visible at the top left of your internet browser and is still one of the critical ranking factors for your website. It’s likely to be the clickable text that appears in search results. Use your brand name and natural keywords, kept within 65 characters.

Optimise URLs

Keep your URLs keyword rich and describe what people will find on the page. Use a hyphen or dash to separate words and keep URLs to less than 100 characters. For example, if you are selling cars, instead of using a link that looked like this: xyz.com/buycars.html, a better option would be: xyz.com/buy-cars-sydney

H1 tags

Make sure you have one H1 (heading) tag on each of your pages.

Alt image tags

Image tags reinforce the relevance of the text content on the page and give you a chance to rank in Google’s Image search section.

Page design/load time

Google wants your website to be coded correctly and load quickly, and recent updates confirm it’s important to have a responsive design, so make sure you’re using a web designer who understands SEO and marketing to assist your speed.

Keyword-rich content

Ensure your content sounds natural and reads well, and not as if the keywords were just placed there to rank highly.

In addition to getting to grips with the jargon, Khoury has a number of tips on how to improve your rankings:

Increase your online visibility

Submit to Google Places to claim a business listing. Then submit to as many directories as you can with the correct business address and phone number. In addition, set up social media accounts – the more of an online footprint you have the better your SEO rankings will be.

Get your keywords right

Continually look at what keywords your competitors are using and don’t select something general such as ‘dentist’. It’s too vague and the chances of getting to page one for this search term is near impossible. Instead, ‘dentist Carlton’ is better as you would be targeting prospects around the Carlton area who are looking for a dentist. Ensure you have a keyword in the headline, but don’t go overboard with the number of times you include keywords and phrases in your copy, or you will be penalised by search engines for keyword stuffing.

Measure, analyse and improve

A positive or negative user experience can have an impact on your search engine result rankings. Check your Google webmaster tools once a month to see if they have found errors on your website, and make sure your site is mobile responsive and easy to use.
